1. Background Information

State your name and the name of the company.
  • What is your title/position and what are your responsibilities in the company?
  • How many years of experience do you (personally) have with BIM?
About the organization
  • How many years of experience does your company have with BIM?
    • How many capital facility projects are you doing in a year ?(In $$ of facility construction)
    • How many employees do you have in your facilities group?

2. BIM Execution Planning

Have you or your company ever been involved in a fully coordinated BIM Project? Y/N
  • Yes - Do you have a BIM Execution Plan? Yes - Who all from your organization contributed to the development of the execution plan? What decisions were made? What process did you use to develop the plan? Did you feel this was a valuable activity? Why, or why not? Can we get a copy?
  • No - Do you think you will be adopting BIM in the near future? Any pilot project planned? What are the reasons for change?

3. Uses of BIM in planning phase of a project

What are the different uses of BIM (specifically utilized in planning and conceptual design) that you are currently implementing on projects, or are uses that you would like to see in the near future.
Investigate the following for different uses:
  • How do you decide what to include in the model and at what level of detail for achieving the objective (Contents; Level of Detail)?
  • How do you create the model? What process, applications and data exchange/file formats (Modeling Process; Applications; Data Exchange/File Formats)?
  • What team competencies are needed?
  • Do you reference additional resources or are you aware of good sources of information related to this use of BIM (Additional BIM Use Resources: Description, Studies, Examples, Software Applications, 3rd Party Vendors)?

4. Organizational Level

Do you think that the cost to implement BIM (in specific to planning stage) on projects outweigh the benefits. Y/N
  • What is the impact of BIM on planning and schematic design (cost, time, overall project delivery time, quality)?
  • Has the composition of your project staff changed? What are new roles that arose with this technology?
What legal, insurance or contractual items do you consider?
  • How has BIM changed the contract language? [Any incentives/constraints applied on BIM methods on projects]
  • Have you experienced any changes in the project delivery methods (IPD)
What issues and concerns are you encountering on projects that incorporate BIM in planning?
  • Are there any barriers in adopting BIM on projects? [Probes: Legal requirements, Software/hardware availability, financial constraints, knowledge of BIM/training, availability of technical support, stakeholder reaction, designer/architect/contractor do not have abilities to use BIM, support from team, other thoughts]

5. Project Level: Case Study

Do you have particular projects that you can identify that have gained significant value through the use of BIM, specifically implemented during the planning phase of a project? Y/N
